I bought the Jolla C2 as I am wondering to change away from Android. I am very surprised on the quality of the phone as well the OS. Its inuitive and very easy to handle. I am also surprised how easy it is to run some major Andoid App. Most of them I tried worked but e.g. the Google Drive did not work but I use it via the browser. The battery lasts beautiful long.
Though there are some issues with Bluetooth coupling with my car as it only works when I connect it with a cable. In addition the camera is ok but remins me that Handys are not cameras ;-).
Overall super interesting with only one major issue: iOS and Andoid are really good systems but, honestly, one hardly needs more than the Jolla C2.
Exactly what I was looking for.
I am not even using the Android Support, the native Jolla store apps and the ones provided on OpenRepos suit all my needs.
Thank you,
Chris.
My experiences with the Jolla C2:
I've been using the Jolla C2 as my daily driver for a year, and I love its clean and organized user interface. It’s reassuring to know that I’m not the product and that I have full control over my data.
Battery Life Performance
The battery life is impressive, especially for a 4000mAh battery. I typically get 1.5 to 2 days of use with heavy activity, which I find very satisfactory.
Android App Support
I use the Android app support only in emergencies, mainly for services that lack native apps or websites.
Digital Sovereignty
With the Jolla C2, digital sovereignty is attainable. One simply needs to be willing to take the first step. The freedom gained is truly rewarding.
Good phone. And thanks to forum guides ,I am using it daily.
For others as well, https://forum.sailfishos.org/ and https://docs.sailfishos.org/ are excellent sources for more information.
Also please give a look to https://docs.sailfishos.org/Support/Help_Articles/ there are tons of help articles.
The only user-ready mobile Linux, not just for nerds. Solid, simple alternative to the major players. It has different pros and cons for a regular user and the Linux enthusiasts, but it definitely deserves solid 4 stars.
From a regular user perspective:
+ Good battery life, requires charging only every second day even during an active usage.
+ Good performance, not as good as latest models of the top brands, but enough for regular tasks like chats, music or online videos.
+/- Outdated built in browser, lightweight, but has troubles with modern heavy websites (like mobile youtube). Brave Android could be used instead.
- Poor camera, cannot make beautiful photos, but enough for QR codes and documents.
- Can be difficult to install Android applications like WhatsApp or banking apps.
From a Linux nerd perspective:
+ Linux device that works smoothly and convenient to use (in comparison to beautiful, but not very stable Plasma Mobile and stable, but slow Phosh)
+ Quite easy to set up environment for development or porting.
+/- Not a Graphene-level, but still descent privacy: native applications run in a firejail-like sandbox, Android subsystem could be switched off.
- Some libraries and packages are old and manual reinstall could be difficult because of the version conflicts.
Thank you Andrey for your comprehensive review, much appreciated!
Do you mind elaborating a bit more on the Graphene OS privacy; what in particular you consider Graphene OS privacy better compared to Sailfish OS? We're very interested to be the best-in-world on that 🙂
